I was standing unusually close to the pelican when I made this photograph—close enough that the encounter no longer felt observational. Instead of pulling away or ignoring me, the bird remained completely present, holding its gaze with a calm attentiveness that felt almost curious. For several moments, it seemed less like I was photographing the pelican and more like we were simply aware of one another.

What stayed with me afterward was the unexpected sense of exchange within such an ordinary encounter. Removed from its surroundings, the image becomes less about wildlife and more about recognition—the quiet tension that can exist when attention is returned. The photograph reflects on those brief moments when distance collapses and the line between observer and subject feels less certain.
